Major Programs and Projects
- Exhibit:
- Enemy Alien Files: Hidden Stories of WWII (2001- Ongoing) - This ground-breaking exhibit was developed by the EAF Consortium member organizations and features 24 panels of rare photos, oral histories and historical research to introduce these little-known stories to the American public. The Exhibit premiered ten days after the tragedies of September 9, 2001. It has traveled statewide and nationally partnering with a range of educational and community institutions including the Manzanar National Historical Site/National Park Service in June 2006. This portable exhibit is available for rental to educational, community and governmental institutions and is a vital complement to conferences, panel discussions and other programs.
- Public Testimonial & Archival Documentation (2005):
- The Assembly on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (AWRIC) took place on April 8-9, 2005, at the Hastings College of the Law in SF. Adapting the concept of the governmental Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians which led to the Japanese American redress bill, the community-based AWRIC allowed an intergenerational audience to bear witness to, and collectively acknowledge the testimonies of former WWII internees of German, Italian and Japanese ancestry as well as stories from the Arab, Muslim and South Asian communitie in the post-9/11 era.
- This landmark 2-day event was documented, with transcripts archived at the National Japanese American Historical Society.
- AWRIC Report and DVD (2006): Here, In America? - Immigrants as 'The Enemy' During World War II and Today - Edited by award-winning author Helen Zia, the 65-page report is a summary of the April 8-9, 2005 event with edited excerpts of testimonies, commentary and background resources. A 14-minute companion DVD provides a succinct overview of this historic event and testimony excerpts. Copies were delivered in May 2006 to members of the US Congress; the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (a body of the Organization of American States); and became available to the public for purchase.
- Curriculum Development and Educator Outreach (2007):
- Multicultural Curriculum Package: Developed by scholar/educator John Christgau with a grant from the Civil Liberties Public Education Program, the curriculum guides are for instructors primarily in the high school and university levels. Included are three Readers Theater scripts (Freedom Lost: Three One-Act Plays) on Enemy Aliens focused on enemy alien internment from Japanese, German, and Italian perspectives.
- Educators' Conference (2007): “Hidden Stories of WWII: A Conference on Enemy Alien Restrictions and Interment”, was held in April 2007, targeting teachers, curriculum specialists, librarians, students and former internees. Premiere performances of “Freedom Lost" in April 2007.
